Petworth United Reformed Church
What is the United Reformed Church?
The United Reformed Church (URC) was formed in October 1972 by the union of the Congregational Church in England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church of England.
These Churches being ‘United’ and of the ‘Reformed’ tradition became the United Reformed Church.
In 1981 the URC entered into union with the Churches of Christ, and in 2000 with the Congregational Union of Scotland.
So, since its inception, the URC has brought together English Presbyterians, English, Welsh and Scottish Congregationalists, and members of the Churches of Christ. Today, although one of the smaller mainstream denominations, the United Reformed Church plays a dynamic and challenging part in the British Christian community; we comprise sixty-eight thousand people, making up 1500 congregations, with nearly 700 ministers (paid and unpaid).
